Sydney Dawson is a soon-to-be graduate of BYU’s Information Systems program, actively pursuing a career in software engineering. Over the past year and a half, she has gone from having little tech experience to becoming a passionate developer eager to solve problems and create innovative solutions.
Summit Experience:
At the Silicon Slopes Summit, Sydney had the chance to connect with talented professionals and hear from inspiring speakers. One of the most impactful moments came from Dr. Astrid S. Tuminez, President of Utah Valley University, who said, "Where we begin does not have to be where we end up." This message resonated deeply with Sydney, who began her journey in the IS program with little tech knowledge. Now, preparing to graduate and pursue software engineering roles, she’s grateful for how far she’s come.
Key Takeaways:
Sydney’s journey in the IS program has included discovering her passion for coding, learning to analyze data, and building programs in multiple languages. Her internship at Periscope Systems further reinforced her decision to pursue software engineering, giving her hands-on experience throughout the development process. She has also been building side projects to continue honing her skills.
Fun Fact:
If Sydney could instantly learn any skill, it would be singing!
Sydney’s growth in the tech world showcases her commitment to learning and her passion for coding. Looking back, she is proud of how far she’s come, thanks to the mentors, professors, and peers who have supported her along the way. Her key takeaway from the summit was the importance of continuing to learn, try, and grow—because, as she now knows, you never know where the journey will take you. She’s excited to continue her journey as a software engineer and see where it leads.
