Student Spotlight

Audrey is a MISM student who had the opportunity of interning with Toyota this summer. We are spotlighting Audrey because she worked to overcome her fear of public speaking durning her internship. She was asked to give a presentation to her pears and a panel of judges, and even though she was scared, she did wonderfully! She received praise from her fellow interns and even from the Chief Product Owner.

We hope each of you are inspired by her experience and that you might be motivated to grow and improve the way she did!

Here's her experience in her own words:

" 'Do it scared'

If you know me, you know public speaking isn't one of my strengths (yet), but that didn't stop me from doing it. Today I presented at the Co-op Showcase in front of a panel of judges, multiple team members, and fellow Co-ops on one of the projects I have been working on this summer at Toyota. During the presentation, I was able to share how I've leveraged my technical background to successfully manage a server-upgrade related project from start to finish. Though the time limit of 20 minutes seemed long, I quickly realized how passionate I was about the project I worked on and could have talked for another 20 minutes!

While the experience was a bit nerve-wracking and possibly not my best performance, it pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and practice something I want to improve upon. I'm learning that sometimes doing it scared is the only way we can get better at it, so my encouragement to you is to do whatever that is that might make you nervous, stressed, or uncomfortable and know it's part of the process!

I want to give a special thank you to Donna Russell, Mike Tromans, Greg Stewart, Amy Buchanan, Samuel Seager and many more on my team who helped with and supported me during this presentation!

Below are some photos from my first week at Toyota! If a 20 minute presentation doesn't sound scary, how about moving across the country to live in a renovated 20ft shipping container for 3 months sound? At least I get to do it with my best friend (and co-worker)!!!"
